The only universal constant is Change. Change is dynamic, progressive, destructive and regenerative. Change is perpetual Motion. Dance, in its myriad forms, is a sacred act of Motion. Cross-culturally, and throughout history it speaks to the wishes, dreams, fears and faith in the human heart. We dance in celebration and in grief. Our bodies speak to our mates and also to our gods. More articulate and expressive than words, the vocabulary of movement can raise energy to inspire courage in a warrior or lust in a lover. The regular and disciplined training of one's body creates the vessel through which kinetic energy may flow. Water that travels over the surface of a stone will, over time, carve a channel. That channel facilitates and directs its continued course of movement. Similarly, one may educate the physical being to facilitate freedom, strength and harmony with the holistic Self.
In my personal experience, Dance has been a cyclic journey. The rigor of classical training led to the achievement of professional performance and composition, then to the role of an Educator. For many in my field, this final role is the one on which we ride off into the sunset ...
... but, like any good Aquarian, I had to go and mess up the routine.
I began training in Ballet at a very young age. It progressed to include Modern Dance, Jazz and assorted contemporary vocabularies, soon thereafter. Performance became a means by which to be more alive than I felt I could be, otherwise. It wasn't until high school, however, that I perceived Dance as having initiated a resonance in my spiritual being as well as in the physical. Once that connection became apparent, it gave rise to a far broader perspective on the human experience.
